Rick Parfitt, the longtime guitarist for Status Quo, died Sunday (Dec. 25) at the age of 68 following a series of health problems.

The band posted a statement on its Facebook page saying that: “We are truly devastated to have to announce that Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt has passed away at lunchtime today. he died in hospital in Marbella, Spain as the result of a severe infection, having been admitted to hospital on Thursday evening following complications to a shoulder injury incurred by a previous fall.”

The guitarist suffered a heart attack earlier this summer which forced him to stop touring with Status Quo ever again — that following another heart attack in 2014 that forced the group to cancel the final six dates of a European tour.

Parfitt joined Status Quo in 1967 and has been with the band ever since, playing on the classic “Pictures Of Matchstick Men” as well as the rest of the band’s catalog. He and bandmate Francis Rossi received an OBE honor during 2010 for their contributions to British culture. Parfitt was planning to record a solo album and write a memoir. He`s survived by his wife, Lyndsay, and four children.
