The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band has set a July 21 release date for its new album, Lay It On Down, the guitarist and company’s first since Goin’ Home in 2014, although he recorded a second album with the all-star The Rides during the interim.

Shepherd has released a trailer online for the set, which was written in Nashville and recorded at Ecophone Studios in Shepherd’s home town of Shreveport, Louisiana.

He first told us about the album back in March, while on the road with the Experience Hendrix Tour; Shepherd described Lay It On Down as “a very contemporary record. The last record we did was traditional blues. I generally kind of bounce around a bit; if you know my musical history, if I do something totally traditional blues, either right before or right after that I do something contemporary.”

The set includes all new songs that Shepherd wrote over the past year and a half, and he worked with new producer Marshall Altman in the studio.

“I’m excited about it,” Shepherd says. “I’m glad to give something new for the fans and have something new to play on stage.”

Shepherd and his band have dates booked throughout the spring and summer, starting with the Bourbon Street Blues Fest on May 20 in Stanhope, N.J. and including a full European tour during the early summer before returning to the U.S. in August.
