Journey guitarist Neal Schon is flexing his musical muscles outside the band a bit. Schon has just released a four-song instrumental solo EP featuring a rendition of “Ave Maria” along with Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love” and renditions of two Journey ballads, “Open Arms” and “Faithfully.”

He’s selling the Ave Maria EP via digital retailers as well as at his own site. It’s Schon’s first new solo music since 2015’s Vortex, and he was also part of Santana IV last year.

Schon is also teaming with his Santana bandmate and Journey co-founder Greg Rolie for a concert to benefit the North Bay Fire Relief charity aiding residents in San Francisco and surrounding areas who were affected by this year’s wildfires. The two will be joined by former Journey drummer Deen Castronovo and bassist Marco Mendoza for the event on February 9 in San Francisco.

Schon, you’ll recall, posted several Twitter messages during Journey’s summer tour about violent differences with his bandmates, particularly keyboardist Jonathan Cain. Things have quieted down, but Journey has not announced any 2018 plans yet.
