Lindsey Buckingham has toured with Fleetwood Mac and as a solo act. But he breaks new ground Wednesday (June 21) as he kicks off a tour with Mac mate Christine McVie to promote their first duo album, which came out earlier this month.
The pair hit the road in Atlanta and will play 15 shows through July 27 in Denver. Buckingham tells us that his solo tours have taught him how to balance new material with the Fleetwood Mac hits fans will want to hear.
“For any band or artist that has been around for as long as we have, they’d probably run you out on a rail if we didn’t do a certain amount of the things that are more well-known from the body of work,” he explains. “So we’ve tried to strike that balance. We are doing, like, eight out of 10 new songs, so that’s kind of cool. And obviously we’re throwing in some Fleetwood Mac and other things as well. And hopefully it adds up to something. It’s hard; we’ve been working on this for awhile.”
Buckingham adds that while he and McVie are working hard, there’s also a casualness to the entire project that’s different from when the Mac machine revs up.
“In the same way the album started off sort of as a lark and has that vibe to it, I’m thinking the shows are going to be fun no matter what we do,” he says. “It’s not like we’re out there and we’ve got something to prove, per se. And we’ll see how it goes. We’re just having fun, and that’s been the whole reason we’re doing this. We’re enjoying each other’s company and enjoying revisiting our entire dynamic for all these years.”
In addition to the duo dates, Buckingham and McVie will regroup with Fleetwood Mac for two The Classic festival shows on July 16 in Los Angeles and July 30 in New York. A Mac tour is being talked about for 2018 and Buckingham is also working on a new solo album for release later this year or next.
