Give Joe Satriani credit for thinking ahead. The guitar hero has announced a Jan. 12 release date for his 16th solo album, What Happens Next, which will feature a power trio comprised of Satriani, former Deep Purple and current Black Country Communion bassist Glenn Hughes and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, who’s also Satriani’s bandmate in the all-star group Chickenfoot.

The 12-track set was co-produced with longtime collaborator Mike Fraser. To celebrate the album’s release, Satriani has put together another G3 tour which will include Dream Theater’s John Petrucci and Def Leppard’s Phil Collen; the trek kicks off Jan. 11 in Seattle and rolls through Feb. 25 in Milwaukee.

Alongside all this, the new documentary Beyond The Supernova by Satriani’s son ZZ will debut next month at the Mill Valley Film Festival near San Francisco chronicling the guitarist’s Shockwave Supernova Tour through Europe and Asia, while Satriani’s 2014 memoir Strange Beautiful Music will be published in paperback on Nov. 7 with a new chapter updating the story.
