Rush may be dormant, but guitarist Alex Lifeson is surfacing on another band’s album. Lifeson plays on “Il Mostro Atomica,” a track on Clone Of The Universe, a new album from stoner rock favorites Fu Manchu.

The group calls the 18-minute piece, which closes the album, the heaviest thing it’s ever recorded, and in a statement frontman Scott Hill says that: “We are excited to get out and play this stuff, especially ‘Il Mostro Atomico.’ We think it’s some of the strongest music we’ve ever done. We really love the overall sound of the album and having Alex play on it is just incredible. It gives that special validation for the idea that we had to try something like a side long song.”

Lifeson, of course, is no stranger to that concept, going back as far as Rush’s 1976 classic “2112.” Clone Of The Universe is due out Feb. 9, and Fu Manchu will be touring Europe and North America during the spring.

Lifeson and Rush, meanwhile, just released an expanded 40th anniversary edition of its 1977 album A Farewell To Kings featuring a full concert recording and covers of the album’s songs by other acts. Rush has otherwise been dormant since a 2015 40th anniversary tour.
